Window Tint Laws for Illinois Residents

Window tint has many benefits and with the weather warming up, it's the perfect time to have your vehicle tinted. Window tint not only enhances how your vehicle looks, but also protects the occupants and the interior with UV and heat rejection qualities. Before you make an appointment to have your windows tinted, there are a few things you should know.

What this blog will be covering is the tint laws for Illinois residents.

This varies by state so if you're reading this and live outside of Illinois, be sure to check out your local laws before having your vehicle tinted.

Important Notice:

While these are the state laws for Illinois, many customers choose not to adhere to them. You should use your best judgement. We carry multiple shades of film ranging from 5% (limo) to 80% (almost clear) and will install whatever film you like (within reason).

This is simply a guide and a reference point.

Tint darkness for sedans and coupes:
  • Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 6 inches of the windshield.
  • Front Side windows: Must allow more than 35% of light in.
  • Back Side windows: Must allow more than 35% of light in.
  • Rear Window: Must allow more than 35% of light in.
Tint darkness for SUV and vans:
  • Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 6 inches of the windshield.
  • Front Side windows: Must allow more than 50% of light in.
  • Back Side windows: Any darkness can be used.
  • Rear Window: Any darkness can be used.

Other Illinois window tint rules and regulations:

  • Side Mirrors: Dual side mirrors are required if back window is tinted.
  • Restricted Colors: No colors of tint are explicitly banned by Illinois tint laws.
  • Tint Variance: 5% variance.
  • Stickers: No sticker to identify legal tinting is required.
  • Medical Exceptions: Illinois does allow medical exemptions for special tint. For more details about the specific terms of the exemption, consult your state law.
  • Penalties: Petty offense with $50-$500 fine. Second or subsequent violations are class C misdemeanor with $100 - $500 fine
